Behind them a man in a red turban, red jacket and dark trousers holds two saddled horses, one pale and one dark, while a grey horse with a blue saddlecloth and more figures wait at the left. A leafy tree rises against a blue sky of broken cloud, and a green slope falls away to distant hills. Signed lower right, dated at the lower left.

Eugène Fromentin (1820–1876) was a French painter and writer from La Rochelle. Three journeys to Algeria between 1846 and 1853 gave him his subject for life: horsemen, falconers and encampments on the high plateaux, painted in silvery light with a quick, feathery touch. He wrote two admired travel books on the Sahara and the Sahel, and his study of Dutch and Flemish painting, The Masters of Past Time (1876), is still read. His work is held by the Musée d'Orsay, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Clark Art Institute.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
