A cord runs from his raised hand to a falcon flying overhead, and a second falcon flares its wings just above his capped head. Red reins and a red breast strap cross the horse's chest above a dark saddlecloth. Behind him blue mountains and rust-brown hills fall away under a pale, cloud-streaked sky.

The original: Watercolor with pen and brown ink on cream wove paper, c. 1864; Cleveland Museum of Art.

Eugène Fromentin (1820–1876) was a French painter and writer from La Rochelle. Three journeys to Algeria between 1846 and 1853 gave him his subject for life: horsemen, falconers and encampments on the high plateaux, painted in silvery light with a quick, feathery touch. He wrote two admired travel books on the Sahara and the Sahel, and his study of Dutch and Flemish painting, The Masters of Past Time (1876), is still read. His work is held by the Musée d'Orsay, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Clark Art Institute.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
