At the front left a woman in a white dress sits leaning back, heavy silver necklaces at her throat, with a figure standing behind her. Beyond, one sits with her cheek on her hand, another in red reclines against the wall below a woman in lilac, and one in blue lies asleep on a patterned rug. A woman in a red headscarf sits on a rooftop above.

The original: Oil on canvas, 1867; Art Institute of Chicago.

Eugène Fromentin (1820–1876) was a French painter and writer from La Rochelle. Three journeys to Algeria between 1846 and 1853 gave him his subject for life: horsemen, falconers and encampments on the high plateaux, painted in silvery light with a quick, feathery touch. He wrote two admired travel books on the Sahara and the Sahel, and his study of Dutch and Flemish painting, The Masters of Past Time (1876), is still read. His work is held by the Musée d'Orsay, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Clark Art Institute.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
