Trained as a drawing teacher, he studied at the Royal Art School in Berlin and taught himself the study of gall midges, working with Karl Möbius at Berlin's Museum für Naturkunde. From 1909 he directed the fight against phylloxera in the Rhineland vineyards, was given the title of professor in 1912 and elected to the Leopoldina in 1917.
