felicien-rops-pornokrates-art-print
Félicien Rops — Pornokratès | Art Print

A blindfolded woman in a black plumed hat with white flowers walks along a stone ledge against a pale blue sky, leading a pink pig on a white cord. She wears long black gloves, a necklace, dark stockings tied with blue bows, embroidered shoes and a trailing blue sash. Three winged infants fly overhead. Below, a frieze of grey figures is labelled SCULPTURE, MUSIQUE, POÉSIE and PEINTURE, and the title is lettered in Greek on a central plaque.

Rops described this drawing in an 1879 letter to Maurice Bonvoisin, and the Musée Félicien Rops in Namur counts it among his major works, also known as La Dame au cochon or Pornocratie. The museum reads it as a double statement: in art, a rejection of academicism, as the modern woman tramples the old arts frozen in stone; in society, a denunciation of bourgeois hypocrisy, with the pig standing for the instincts that lead her.

Félicien Rops (1833–1898) was a Belgian printmaker and illustrator, a master of etching and a central figure of Belgian Symbolism. He made frontispieces for Baudelaire and Barbey d'Aurevilly, and his satanic and macabre plates shocked and fascinated Paris. The Musée Félicien Rops in Namur holds the largest collection of his work.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
