Signed and dated at the lower left, 1913.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eVallotton painted the canvas in 1913, and the Hahnloser collectors of Winterthur bought it the following year as one of a group of four large-format figure paintings they acquired in support of work that even sympathetic collectors then found difficult. Its arrangement of two women answers Manet's Olympia of 1863. The picture is now on long-term loan from the Hahnloser\/Jaeggli Foundation to the Kunstmuseum Bern.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFélix Vallotton (1865–1925) was a Swiss-born painter and printmaker, naturalised as a French citizen in 1900. Trained in Paris at the Académie Julian, he joined the Nabis in 1892, though his cool, detached manner earned him the nickname the Foreign Nabi. He made his name with stark black-and-white woodcuts of domestic and street life, notably the series Intimités, and went on to paint nudes, portraits and landscapes in flat, hard-edged colour.
