In front of it, pale cylinders are banded in graded red and blue washes, and a blue vase-like shape stands at lower left. Ochre panels, grey washes and a thin black column with a grey ladder rise behind, and a grey half-disc sits at upper left. Fine pencil lines mark the edges of the shapes.

Fernand Léger (1881–1955) was a French painter born in Argentan, Normandy. After early Cubist work in Paris he developed a style of tubular, machine-like forms; his service in the First World War, where he was gassed at Verdun in 1916, turned him towards the imagery of modern industry. In the 1920s his paintings set flat bands of pure colour against modelled cylinders, discs and figures, and he made the experimental film Ballet mécanique (1924). His work is held by the Centre Pompidou, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Musée national Fernand Léger in Biot.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
