fra-angelico-madonna-and-child-enthroned-and-twelve-angels-fine-art-print
Fra Angelico — Madonna and Child Enthroned and Twelve Angels | Fine Art Print

The Virgin in a deep blue mantle sits on a white Gothic throne beneath a domed gold canopy, an infant on her lap, against a flat gold ground. Angels with gold halos stand and kneel around the steps, in robes of rose, pale blue, olive, white and gold; some press their hands together and others turn toward the Child. A dark blue floor runs along the foot of the panel, and the angels' dark wings are edged in gold.

The Städel Museum says the panel was probably created in the 1420s. Its fine brushwork and rich gilding suggest it served both private devotion and a display of refined taste. The museum singles out the perspective of the canopy above the throne and the varied poses and gestures of the angels, and notes that it acquired the panel in 1831.

The original: mixed technique on poplar panel, ca. 1420-1430; Städel Museum, Frankfurt am Main.

Fra Angelico (c. 1395–1455), born Guido di Pietro in the Mugello region of Tuscany, was a Dominican friar and painter of the early Florentine Renaissance. By 1423 he had joined the convent of San Domenico at Fiesole as Fra Giovanni; he painted only religious subjects. Under the patronage of Cosimo de' Medici he decorated the convent of San Marco in Florence with a cycle of frescoes, and he later worked in Rome for Popes Eugene IV and Nicholas V. His work helped bring linear perspective and a new depth and solidity into Florentine painting. Pope John Paul II beatified him in 1982 and in 1984 named him patron of artists.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
