fra-angelico-virgin-annunciate-fine-art-print
Fra Angelico — Virgin Annunciate | Fine Art Print

Against a worn gold ground, a young woman bows her head, eyes lowered and cheeks flushed pink, hands crossed over her chest. Her fair curled hair is held by a black band beneath a halo of incised gold lettering. She wears a rose-pink dress with a patterned gold collar and cuff and a blue mantle lined in yellow. At the left a small red-covered book with lines of script along its pages is held open, a red ribbon marker hanging below it.

The Detroit Institute of Arts says this panel and its companion Angel Annunciate were once part of a large altarpiece, placed to the left and right above a central painting. It reads her bowed head as the moment just after the angel's announcement, when she submits to the will of God.

The original: gold leaf and tempera on wood panel, 1450-55; Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit.

Fra Angelico (c. 1395–1455), born Guido di Pietro in the Mugello region of Tuscany, was a Dominican friar and painter of the early Florentine Renaissance. By 1423 he had joined the convent of San Domenico at Fiesole as Fra Giovanni; he painted only religious subjects. Under the patronage of Cosimo de' Medici he decorated the convent of San Marco in Florence with a cycle of frescoes, and he later worked in Rome for Popes Eugene IV and Nicholas V. His work helped bring linear perspective and a new depth and solidity into Florentine painting. Pope John Paul II beatified him in 1982 and in 1984 named him patron of artists.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
