A brick wall at the far right throws a long diagonal shadow across the quay, where small figures in dark coats stand and walk. Seven gondolas, several poled by men in white shirts, cross the grey-green water under a blue sky with white clouds.

Francesco Guardi (1712–1793) was the last great painter of Venice's view-painting tradition. Trained in his family's workshop alongside his brother Gian Antonio, he turned to views (vedute) in his forties, at first close to Canaletto's, then increasingly free: flickering brushwork, silvery lagoon light and small, quickly sketched figures. He painted the city's festivals, regattas and interiors such as the Ridotto gaming house, as well as imaginary capriccios of ruins by the water. Little valued in his lifetime, he was later admired as a forerunner of Impressionism. His work is held by the National Gallery, London, the Louvre and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
