francisco-de-goya-allegory-of-love-cupid-and-psyche-fine-art-print
Francisco de Goya — Allegory of Love, Cupid and Psyche | Fine Art Print

A young man with grey-green wings rising behind his head, bare to the hips, a red cloth tied at his waist and sandals laced up his legs, steps towards a dark-haired young woman and reaches out a hand to her. She lies propped on white pillows in a sheer white gown banded with gold, one arm raised and the other hand at her hair, looking up at him. A gilded carved head decorates the couch, and the room around them is almost black.

The Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya reads the painting as the myth told in Apuleius's Metamorphoses, in which Cupid visits Psyche at night while hiding his identity. It notes that the composition recalls Titian's Tarquin and Lucretia, now in the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, and points to resemblances between the model for Psyche and the woman in Goya's Majas.

The original: oil on canvas, 1798-1805; Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya, Barcelona.

Francisco de Goya (1746–1828) was a Spanish painter and printmaker, born in Fuendetodos in Aragon. He rose through tapestry designs for the royal factory to become court painter to Charles IV in 1789 and First Court Painter in 1799. Deafness from 1793 turned his work inward: the eighty prints of Los Caprichos appeared in 1799, the Disasters of War recorded the Peninsular War (published only in 1863), and the Black Paintings covered the walls of his house outside Madrid in 1819–1823. He left Spain in 1824 and died in Bordeaux; The Third of May 1808 and the Black Paintings hang in the Museo del Prado.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
