The Clark Art Institute identifies this canvas as a sketch for one of those tapestries, presented for the king's approval; the servant with the basket of grapes on her head personifies Autumn, the season of plentiful harvests.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe original: oil on canvas, 1786; Clark Art Institute, Williamstown.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFrancisco de Goya (1746–1828) was a Spanish painter and printmaker, born in Fuendetodos in Aragon. He rose through tapestry designs for the royal factory to become court painter to Charles IV in 1789 and First Court Painter in 1799. Deafness from 1793 turned his work inward: the eighty prints of Los Caprichos appeared in 1799, the Disasters of War recorded the Peninsular War (published only in 1863), and the Black Paintings covered the walls of his house outside Madrid in 1819–1823. He left Spain in 1824 and died in Bordeaux; The Third of May 1808 and the Black Paintings hang in the Museo del Prado.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eEach print is a giclée, printed to order.
