Behind them a dark, hunched figure with long donkey ears and a cloth tied over its eyes lifts a spoon from a large basket-like pot toward the standing man's mouth. The grey aquatint ground is plain and dark. The plate number 50 is etched at the top right and the title 'Los Chinchillas' beneath.

The original: etching and aquatint, 1799; Cleveland Museum of Art.

Francisco de Goya (1746–1828) was a Spanish painter and printmaker, born in Fuendetodos in Aragon. He rose through tapestry designs for the royal factory to become court painter to Charles IV in 1789 and First Court Painter in 1799. Deafness from 1793 turned his work inward: the eighty prints of Los Caprichos appeared in 1799, the Disasters of War recorded the Peninsular War (published only in 1863), and the Black Paintings covered the walls of his house outside Madrid in 1819–1823. He left Spain in 1824 and died in Bordeaux; The Third of May 1808 and the Black Paintings hang in the Museo del Prado.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
