He rose through tapestry designs for the royal factory to become court painter to Charles IV in 1789 and First Court Painter in 1799. Deafness from 1793 turned his work inward: the eighty prints of Los Caprichos appeared in 1799, the Disasters of War recorded the Peninsular War (published only in 1863), and the Black Paintings covered the walls of his house outside Madrid in 1819–1823.
