francisco-de-goya-saturn-devouring-his-son-art-print
Francisco de Goya — Saturn Devouring His Son | Art Print

Out of a black ground a gaunt, grey-haired giant crouches towards the viewer, eyes wide and staring, gripping a headless body in both fists with his jaws at its shoulder. Red blood marks the torn flesh, and the pale body hangs from his hands, seen from behind. His bent knee and long arm catch a dull light while the rest of him sinks into darkness. It is one of the Black Paintings, painted as a mural and later transferred to canvas.

Francisco de Goya (1746–1828) was a Spanish painter and printmaker, born in Fuendetodos in Aragon. He rose through tapestry designs for the royal factory to become court painter to Charles IV in 1789 and First Court Painter in 1799. Deafness from 1793 turned his work inward: the eighty prints of Los Caprichos appeared in 1799, the Disasters of War recorded the Peninsular War (published only in 1863), and the Black Paintings covered the walls of his house outside Madrid in 1819–1823. He left Spain in 1824 and died in Bordeaux; The Third of May 1808 and the Black Paintings hang in the Museo del Prado.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
