Around him men cover their faces or pray, and bodies lie on the ground before them, stained red. Opposite, a tight row of soldiers in greatcoats and tall shakos levels their muskets, their faces turned away. A church tower and town buildings rise against the black sky behind.

Goya painted the scene in 1814 as the companion to his Second of May 1808, showing the executions carried out on the night after the Madrid uprising against French troops. The Fundación Goya en Aragón catalogue notes that the soldiers' faces are never shown while each condemned man takes a different pose, and that the cube of light from the lantern has been called a forerunner of Cubism. Damage at the lower left dates from the painting's move to Valencia in 1937, during the Spanish Civil War.

Francisco de Goya (1746–1828) was a Spanish painter and printmaker, born in Fuendetodos in Aragon. He rose through tapestry designs for the royal factory to become court painter to Charles IV in 1789 and First Court Painter in 1799. Deafness from 1793 turned his work inward: the eighty prints of Los Caprichos appeared in 1799, the Disasters of War recorded the Peninsular War (published only in 1863), and the Black Paintings covered the walls of his house outside Madrid in 1819–1823. He left Spain in 1824 and died in Bordeaux; The Third of May 1808 and the Black Paintings hang in the Museo del Prado.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
