For the placing of the figure on the cross, the museum says, Zurbarán drew on a privately owned Crucifixion that is signed and dated 1655.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe original: oil on canvas, c. 1655; Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya, Barcelona.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFrancisco de Zurbarán (1598–1664) was a Spanish painter of the Golden Age, active chiefly in Seville, where he worked for the city's monasteries and religious orders. His saints and monks, set against dark grounds in strong, sculptural light, earned him the name \"the Spanish Caravaggio\", and his rare still lifes of a few vessels or fruits on a ledge are among the most admired of the century. In later life he moved to Madrid, where he died.
