francisco-de-zurbaran-still-life-with-dish-of-quince-fine-art-print
Francisco de Zurbarán — Still Life with Dish of Quince | Fine Art Print

Four quinces with matte olive-gold skins are heaped on a shallow metal dish against a black ground, one on top and three around it, the light falling from the left and leaving the right-hand fruit half in shadow. A thin line of light runs along the dish's front rim. At the lower right a crumpled sheet of white cloth spills over the edge of the dark table, its folds roughly brushed.

The Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya says radiographic studies suggest this canvas was once cut from a larger one to become an independent painting, perhaps a detail from a religious scene of a domestic interior in which a dish of fruit alluded to the Redemption. The museum notes that dating is disputed: the execution points to about 1630, though it could also relate to Zurbarán's last period.

The original: oil on canvas, 1633–1635; Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya, Barcelona.

Francisco de Zurbarán (1598–1664) was a Spanish painter of the Golden Age, active chiefly in Seville, where he worked for the city's monasteries and religious orders. His saints and monks, set against dark grounds in strong, sculptural light, earned him the name "the Spanish Caravaggio", and his rare still lifes of a few vessels or fruits on a ledge are among the most admired of the century. In later life he moved to Madrid, where he died. His work is held by the Prado, the National Gallery, London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
