francisco-de-zurbaran-still-life-with-vessels-fine-art-print
Francisco de Zurbarán — Still Life with Vessels | Fine Art Print

Four vessels stand in a line on a shelf against a black ground: a gilt metal goblet on a pewter plate at the left, a tall cream jug with a scalloped neck and two ribbed handles, a slender terracotta bottle with a ringed neck, and a squat cream jar with spiral fluting and two handles, set on a second pewter plate at the right. Light picks out the glaze, the ridges and the metal, and the shelf fades into brown shadow below.

The Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya sees light as the picture's second protagonist: it lifts the vessels out of the black ground, models their volumes and sets their colours against one another. The museum finds the composition serene and silent, with time standing still, and compares its taste for the essential to avant-garde art. It came to Barcelona with the Cambó Bequest, entering the collection in 1951.

The original: oil on canvas, c. 1650; Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya, Barcelona.

Francisco de Zurbarán (1598–1664) was a Spanish painter of the Golden Age, active chiefly in Seville, where he worked for the city's monasteries and religious orders. His saints and monks, set against dark grounds in strong, sculptural light, earned him the name "the Spanish Caravaggio", and his rare still lifes of a few vessels or fruits on a ledge are among the most admired of the century. In later life he moved to Madrid, where he died. His work is held by the Prado, the National Gallery, London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
