francois-boucher-boy-with-a-carrot-fine-art-print
François Boucher — Boy with a Carrot | Fine Art Print

A boy with tousled brown hair tied back in a blue ribbon turns his face to the right, lips parted in a half smile. He wears a rust-brown coat buttoned over a white cravat, and one hand closes around a pale yellow carrot whose feathery white leaves lie across his chest. The pastel sits on soft grey-buff paper, with the signature and the date 1738 written at the upper left.

The Art Institute of Chicago suggests the sitter may be a studio apprentice and calls the sheet one of Boucher's first and finest forays into pastel, a medium that let Rococo artists give their images a spirited directness. Boucher seldom made finished independent works on paper, and the same young model, again holding a carrot, appears in at least two of his pastoral paintings.

The original: pastel on buff laid paper, 1738; Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago.

François Boucher (1703–1770) was the leading French painter of the Rococo. Trained in Paris and in Italy, he became first painter to Louis XV and director of the Royal Academy, and was the favourite artist of Madame de Pompadour, whom he painted several times. He worked across every genre — mythologies of Venus and her attendants, pastorals, chinoiserie, portraits and designs for the Beauvais and Gobelins tapestry works — in a light, decorative palette of pinks and blues. His work is held by the Wallace Collection, the Louvre and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
