Dovecotes sheltered doves and pigeons and kept them from ravaging crops, and they supplied fowl for a farmer's table. Trained in Paris and in Italy, he became first painter to Louis XV and director of the Royal Academy, and was the favourite artist of Madame de Pompadour, whom he painted several times. He worked across every genre — mythologies of Venus and her attendants, pastorals, chinoiserie, portraits and designs for the Beauvais and Gobelins tapestry works — in a light, decorative palette of pinks and blues.
