Signed and dated 1928 lower left.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFrank Tenney Johnson (1874–1939) was an American painter and illustrator of the West, known for night scenes lit only by moonlight and starlight. Born on a farm in Pottawattamie County, Iowa, he studied at the Milwaukee School of Art and, from 1895, at the Art Students League of New York under John Henry Twachtman. From 1904 to 1920 he worked mainly as an illustrator for Field \u0026amp; Stream while travelling west for material; in 1912 he sketched with Charles M. Russell on the Blackfoot Reservation in Montana. In 1920 he moved to Alhambra, California, and from 1931 kept a studio at Cody, Wyoming, outside Yellowstone.
