frans-hals-malle-babbe-fine-art-print
Frans Hals — Malle Babbe | Fine Art Print

A laughing woman in a white cap and a wide, rumpled white ruff leans toward a pewter tankard with a hinged lid at the left, her mouth open mid-laugh. An owl perches on her shoulder at the right. Her dark brown dress and the dark brown ground are painted in loose, quick strokes, with flicks of white and cream light on the ruff, cap and tankard.

The Gemäldegalerie reads the sitter as Barbara Claes, a woman known in Haarlem as Malle Babbe, whom archival research shows was confined to a local institution in 1646; Hals probably knew her as a familiar local figure. It reads the owl as a sign of drunkenness and singles out the loose, sketch-like brushwork and the laughing expression. The museum acquired the painting in 1874 with the collection of the banker Barthold Suermondt of Aachen.

The original: on canvas, c. 1640-1646; Gemäldegalerie, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin.

Frans Hals (c. 1582–1666) was a Dutch painter, born in Antwerp, whose family moved to Haarlem when he was young. He studied there with the Flemish émigré Karel van Mander, joined the Haarlem Guild of Saint Luke in 1610, and lived and worked in the city for the rest of his life, running a busy workshop. He painted portraits of burghers and married couples, group portraits of civic guard companies and hospital regents, and tronies, or character studies, made for the open market. He is known for loose, visible brushwork and lively, informal sitters. His work is held by the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem, the Rijksmuseum and the Louvre.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
