The Rijksmuseum notes that Frans Hals began it and designed the composition, and is believed to have painted the seven figures at the left. He never finished it: Pieter Codde completed the picture, painting the seven figures at the right and altering the central figure. It has been on loan to the museum from the City of Amsterdam since 1885.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe original: oil on canvas, 1637; Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (on loan from the City of Amsterdam).\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFrans Hals (c. 1582–1666) was a Dutch painter, born in Antwerp, whose family moved to Haarlem when he was young. He studied there with the Flemish émigré Karel van Mander, joined the Haarlem Guild of Saint Luke in 1610, and lived and worked in the city for the rest of his life, running a busy workshop. He painted portraits of burghers and married couples, group portraits of civic guard companies and hospital regents, and tronies, or character studies, made for the open market. He is known for loose, visible brushwork and lively, informal sitters. His work is held by the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem, the Rijksmuseum and the Louvre.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eEach print is a giclée, printed to order.
