He studied there with the Flemish émigré Karel van Mander, joined the Haarlem Guild of Saint Luke in 1610, and lived and worked in the city for the rest of his life, running a busy workshop. He painted portraits of burghers and married couples, group portraits of civic guard companies and hospital regents, and tronies, or character studies, made for the open market. He is known for loose, visible brushwork and lively, informal sitters.
