Early viewers found the picture shocking, and it is said to have been jeered at when first shown. It belonged to Marc's patron Bernhard Koehler and passed through his family's foundation before reaching the Staedtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus, Munich, in 1965, and by 2010 was counted among the most frequently reproduced paintings in art history.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFranz Marc (1880–1916) was a German painter and a founder of Der Blaue Reiter. Born in Munich and trained at its Academy of Fine Arts, he made animals his subject, painting them not as they appear but as he imagined they felt, in saturated colour and simplified form, in the Blue Horse paintings, the Yellow Cow and Fate of the Animals (1913). With Wassily Kandinsky he founded the Blaue Reiter almanac and its Munich exhibitions in 1911, and was killed at Verdun five years later. His paintings are held by the Lenbachhaus in Munich, the Franz Marc Museum in Kochel am See and the Solomon R.
