Kurt Grawi, a Jewish banker, owned the picture until the Nazi era forced him to sell it and flee to Chile; it passed through American and German hands before entering Dusseldorf's city art collection in 1962. In 2022 Germany's advisory panel on Nazi-looted art found the 1940 sale coerced, and the painting was returned to Grawi's heirs.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFranz Marc (1880–1916) was a German painter and a founder of Der Blaue Reiter. Born in Munich and trained at its Academy of Fine Arts, he made animals his subject, painting them not as they appear but as he imagined they felt, in saturated colour and simplified form, in the Blue Horse paintings, the Yellow Cow and Fate of the Animals (1913). With Wassily Kandinsky he founded the Blaue Reiter almanac and its Munich exhibitions in 1911, and was killed at Verdun five years later. His paintings are held by the Lenbachhaus in Munich, the Franz Marc Museum in Kochel am See and the Solomon R.
