He studied at the Cologne School of Arts and Crafts from 1910 to 1914, then worked through Dada and other movements in Cologne before becoming a leading figure of Figurative Constructivism, co-founding the short-lived Stupid group with fellow Cologne Progressives. His paintings and woodcuts reduce workers and city dwellers to flattened, geometric figures arranged in tight, mural-like compositions, reflecting his commitment to a politically engaged, collective art.
