Born in Vienna, he studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts from 1881 under Christian Griepenkerl, then history painting under Leopold Carl Müller. After study trips to the Balkans in 1886, he travelled repeatedly to Egypt from 1892 with archducal support, and an exhibition in Cairo established his reputation and brought him commissions. He painted Egyptian and Arab street and genre scenes alongside portraits, including two of Archduke Ferdinand Karl in 1895.
