Trained in Frankfurt, Rome and Paris, he made his name with Cimabue's Celebrated Madonna, bought by Queen Victoria in 1855, and went on to paint mythological and classical subjects of great formal refinement, among them Flaming June. He was President of the Royal Academy from 1878 and, shortly before his death, the first painter raised to the peerage.
