Two men hold the ends of a long pole slung with a roast over the embers, while one crouches by the pots and another swings an axe at right. A man in a red headband stands among them. Horses stand on the ridge, and snow-capped mountains lie at the left. The signature is at the lower left.

The original: oil on canvas, about 1892; Yale University Art Gallery.

Frederic Remington (1861–1909) fixed the visual image of the American West for a century. A magazine illustrator first, he travelled on commission through the plains and the Southwest and drew cavalry columns, scouts and cow ponies with a reporter's specificity; late in life he turned to painting proper, and to nocturnes in which the figures are barely readable against blue dark. He was also a serious bronze sculptor. His work is held by the Amon Carter Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Buffalo Bill Center of the West.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
