The nearest rider, at the foot of the slope, turns to look back. Smaller riders follow further up, and two men stand on the crest against a clear blue sky beside a small dog. Blue trousers show beneath the coats, and long shadows fall across the sand. The signature is at lower right.

The original: oil on canvas, 1891; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

Frederic Remington (1861–1909) fixed the visual image of the American West for a century. A magazine illustrator first, he travelled on commission through the plains and the Southwest and drew cavalry columns, scouts and cow ponies with a reporter's specificity; late in life he turned to painting proper, and to nocturnes in which the figures are barely readable against blue dark. He was also a serious bronze sculptor. His work is held by the Amon Carter Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Buffalo Bill Center of the West.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
