Seen from behind, a Native American rider in a blue headcloth with two white feathers raises an open hand; a quiver rides on his back and a lance with red strips lies across his arm. Facing him a bearded man in fringed buckskin and a fur cap holds out a hand, a rifle across his saddle. More riders wait on the ridge behind. Signed and dated at the lower right.

The original: oil on canvas, 1903; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

Frederic Remington (1861–1909) fixed the visual image of the American West for a century. A magazine illustrator first, he travelled on commission through the plains and the Southwest and drew cavalry columns, scouts and cow ponies with a reporter's specificity; late in life he turned to painting proper, and to nocturnes in which the figures are barely readable against blue dark. He was also a serious bronze sculptor. His work is held by the Amon Carter Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Buffalo Bill Center of the West.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
