The Art Institute of Chicago reads the range of ages and social classes among the skaters and onlookers as a picture of who used the city's public parks.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eGeorge Bellows (1882–1925) was an American painter of the Ashcan School. Born in Columbus, Ohio, he studied under Robert Henri in New York and became known for vigorous, dramatically lit scenes of the city's underside, above all the boxing paintings Stag at Sharkey's and Both Members of This Club, both 1909, alongside crowded urban views such as Cliff Dwellers (1913).
