Born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, he gave up the law in 1821 to paint portraits. From St. Louis he made five journeys between 1830 and 1836; in 1832 he went up the Missouri River to Fort Union, painting Mandan, Hidatsa, Crow, Assiniboine, Blackfeet and other nations. He showed the resulting Indian Gallery to paying audiences in American cities and, from 1839, in London, Brussels and Paris, where he often staged Native Americans dancing alongside it. Debt forced its sale in 1852; it reached the Smithsonian in 1879.
