The tower and chimney seen here belonged to a printing plant on the stream owned by Samuel Crump, a piece of industry that contemporaries viewed as a civilizing advance on the landscape rather than an intrusion on it. The painting has been in the Minneapolis Institute of Art since 2000.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eGeorge Inness (1825–1894) moved American landscape away from panorama and toward mood. Largely self-taught, he absorbed the Barbizon painters on visits to France and, in later life, the writings of Swedenborg; his mature pictures dissolve the detail of the Hudson River School into soft masses of warm light — Tarpon Springs, Montclair, herons in a marsh at dusk. He painted the subjective effect of a place rather than its inventory.
