The title block sits at upper left in heavy black capitals, with a population-density inset at upper right and a boxed legend at lower right. Brown hachures shade the mountains, and a row of small clock dials runs along the bottom edge.

The original: colour map, 84 x 111 cm, published by Weber Costello Co., Library of Congress, Geography and Map Division.

George Washington Bacon, born in 1830, was a mapmaker and publisher whose business made its name with maps of London. After setting up several businesses in 1861 and going bankrupt in 1867, he began G. W. Bacon & Co. at 127 Strand in 1870, basing his atlases on plates Edward Weller had used for the Weekly Dispatch Atlas. He bought James Wyld's map business in 1893, and around 1900 the firm was taken over by W. & A. K. Johnston of Edinburgh; maps carrying the Bacon name were still being produced in 1956.

Printed as a museum-grade giclée on Hahnemühle fine art paper using 12-ink archival pigment printing.
