He trained at the École des Beaux-Arts under Henri Lehmann, then developed, through study of colour theory by Michel Eugène Chevreul and Ogden Rood, a technique of applying small dots of pure colour that he called chromoluminarism and that became known as pointillism. His large exhibition canvases, above all A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, translate everyday Parisian leisure into carefully calculated, almost systematic arrangements of colour and form.
