A gold eagle stands beside him, with a black inkpot and a red pen case on the grass. Around him the blue-green sea carries a ship with furled sails and smaller boats under sail, a towered islet and a shore with a pale fortress. A gold frame with scrolling foliage bears gold capitals reading In principio erat verbum.

The original: a leaf from a book of hours, painted in tempera colours, gold leaf, gold and silver paint and ink in Provence, France, about 1480–1490. It is held by the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles.

Georges Trubert was a French illuminator who began his career about 1467 in Provence at the court of René I of Anjou, titular king of Naples, who made him his valet de chambre and paid for him to travel to Rome. After René's death he stayed in Provence, and by 1491 he was working for René II, duke of Lorraine. His style joins ideas from Italian panel painting and Flemish art, and his surviving work is all in religious manuscripts; a leaf with Saint John on Patmos is in the J. Paul Getty Museum.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order. Unframed prints are made on Hahnemühle German Etching, a 310gsm matte fine-art paper.
