A document of 1525 says Giorgione began it and Titian finished it, and repeated conservation leaves it unclear which passages each painted. A figure of Cupid once sat at Venus's feet; in 1837 it was painted over with meadow green. The picture was first inventoried in 1722 to 1728 as a Titian.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe original: oil on canvas, c. 1508\/10; Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister, Dresden.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eGiorgione (Giorgio Barbarelli da Castelfranco, c. 1473–1510) was an Italian painter of the Venetian school, born in Castelfranco Veneto. Early biographers say he trained with Giovanni Bellini. He settled in Venice, where he painted an altarpiece for his hometown and, with Titian, frescoes for the Fondaco dei Tedeschi, of which little survives. He is known for quiet, poetic pictures of landscapes with figures and of non-narrative subjects, such as The Tempest. Only a handful of surviving paintings are firmly attributed to him, none signed, and he died of plague in his thirties. His work is held by the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice, the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna and the Uffizi.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eEach print is a giclée, printed to order.
