giorgione-three-philosophers-fine-art-print
Giorgione — Three Philosophers | Fine Art Print

Three men stand in a clearing before a dark rock face at the left, with a hazy valley and distant village opening behind them. A young man sits at the left in a white shirt and dark green robe, holding a sheet and a small dark frame as he looks up. A standing man in a white turban wears a red tunic over a blue-grey skirt. At the right an older man with a long grey beard wears an ochre cloak and holds a sheet of paper.

The Kunsthistorisches Museum notes that an entry of 1525 already calls the three men philosophers. Today they are usually identified as Pythagoras, seated, with his teachers Pherecydes and Thales, who were regarded in the Renaissance as the first philosophers of the Western world. The museum suggests the rock with its spring probably stands for the oracle of Apollo at Didyma, and adds that the left side of the canvas has been heavily cut.

The original: oil on canvas, around 1508/09; Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna.

Giorgione (Giorgio Barbarelli da Castelfranco, c. 1473–1510) was an Italian painter of the Venetian school, born in Castelfranco Veneto. Early biographers say he trained with Giovanni Bellini. He settled in Venice, where he painted an altarpiece for his hometown and, with Titian, frescoes for the Fondaco dei Tedeschi, of which little survives. He is known for quiet, poetic pictures of landscapes with figures and of non-narrative subjects, such as The Tempest. Only a handful of surviving paintings are firmly attributed to him, none signed, and he died of plague in his thirties. His work is held by the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice, the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna and the Uffizi.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
