The half-revealed breast and the laurel that gives the sitter her name have prompted conflicting readings, among them that she is Laura, beloved of the poet Petrarch, in a contest between painting and poetry. An inscription on the back gives the artist's name, the year 1506 and a client, Master Giacomo.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe original: canvas on spruce wood, 1506; Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eGiorgione (Giorgio Barbarelli da Castelfranco, c. 1473–1510) was an Italian painter of the Venetian school, born in Castelfranco Veneto. Early biographers say he trained with Giovanni Bellini. He settled in Venice, where he painted an altarpiece for his hometown and, with Titian, frescoes for the Fondaco dei Tedeschi, of which little survives. He is known for quiet, poetic pictures of landscapes with figures and of non-narrative subjects, such as The Tempest. Only a handful of surviving paintings are firmly attributed to him, none signed, and he died of plague in his thirties. His work is held by the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice, the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna and the Uffizi.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eEach print is a giclée, printed to order.
