Slender bare trees and pale hills recede into a bright sky at left.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThis canvas illustrates an episode from Torquato Tasso's 1581 epic Gerusalemme liberata, in which the sorceress Armida discovers the sleeping crusader knight Rinaldo and decides to carry him away on her cloud-borne chariot. It was one of a suite of large canvases Tiepolo painted, probably for a hall in the Palazzo Corner in Venice, retelling the doomed love of Armida and Rinaldo. It has been in the Art Institute of Chicago since 1925.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eGiovanni Battista Tiepolo (1696–1770) was the last of the great Venetian decorators and the most inventive fresco painter of the eighteenth century. He filled ceilings in Venice, Würzburg and Madrid with pale, weightless skies and figures seen from below, and drew constantly — heads of philosophers and orientals, studied in chalk and oil, that he reused across his commissions. He died in Madrid in the service of Charles III.
