A dark cap sits on the head and sheets of paper stand in for a collar. A brown fur-trimmed coat covers a dark patterned jacket, and a stack of books tied with a yellow cord forms the bottom edge, against an olive-green ground.

Arcimboldo's allegorical paintings were held in high esteem by Maximilian II and Rudolf II, and this one belonged to the imperial collections in Prague before it came to Sweden after the Thirty Years' War. The Nationalmuseum notes that the sitter could possibly be Ulrich Zasius, a lawyer in the imperial administration.

The original: oil on canvas, 1566; Nationalmuseum, Stockholm.

Giuseppe Arcimboldo (1527–1593) was an Italian Mannerist painter, born in Milan.
