At upper left a brown branch is cut open to show a white wedge of tissue above a block of pitted brown bark. A green stem runs down and branches into a loose spray of paired oval leaves, with small yellow flowers at the forks. Across the middle and right, enlarged flowers, a cut bud with a yellow, black-dotted core, a cluster of three white berries and several green sections are drawn in greens, yellows and cream.

Gottlieb von Koch (1849–1914) was a German zoologist, painter, sculptor and museum curator. A former assistant to Ernst Haeckel at Jena, he taught zoology in Darmstadt from 1875 and became zoological curator of its state museum, where he pioneered dioramas that set mounted animals in natural-looking surroundings. From 1892 he worked with the teacher Heinrich Jung and Friedrich Quentell on the Jung–Koch–Quentell wall charts, large teaching plates of single plant and animal species painted against plain, often black grounds and simplified into clear, almost geometric forms. The charts stayed in use in schools and universities until the late twentieth century and were reissued as recently as 2015.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
