After art school in Riga he served with the Latvian Riflemen, then studied in Moscow under Kazimir Malevich and Antoine Pevsner and taught colour theory at VKhUTEMAS from 1924 to 1930. With his wife and collaborator Valentina Kulagina he made photomontage posters such as Electrification of the Whole Country (1920) and Let Us Fulfil the Plan of Great Works (1930). He was arrested in Moscow in January 1938 and executed that February.
