gustave-caillebotte-banks-of-a-canal-near-naples-fine-art-print
Gustave Caillebotte — Banks of a Canal, near Naples | Fine Art Print

A canal curves from the lower left into a flat distance, its still water grey-blue under a pale sky with a few small white clouds. On the near bank a worn brown path runs beside strips of green growth, and two pale stone posts stand at the water's edge. Fields in yellow-green spread across the left bank, a band of reddish-brown earth lies beyond the path at the upper right, and a line of small trees marks the horizon. The signature is at the lower right.

The National Gallery of Ireland thinks Caillebotte painted this view during a visit to Italy in 1872, or when he visited the painter Giuseppe de Nittis at Portici in the autumn of 1875. It notes that cutting the scene at the canvas edges and giving the foreground stone posts prominence produces an incidental, curiously modern view, often linked to developments in photography.

The original: oil on canvas, c. 1872, National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin.

Gustave Caillebotte (1848–1894) was a French painter closely tied to the Impressionists, whom he also supported as a collector, buying paintings by Monet, Renoir and Pissarro and helping fund their exhibitions. Trained under Léon Bonnat after a law degree, he painted the streets and boating life of Paris with a sharper, more realist precision than his colleagues, most famously in Paris Street; Rainy Day (1877) and The Floor Scrapers (1875). His work is held by the Art Institute of Chicago, the Musée d'Orsay and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Printed as a museum-grade giclée on Hahnemühle fine art paper using 12-ink archival pigment printing.
