Three small trays of round fruit in blue-black, grey-green and grey-blue sit in the centre foreground, and pale green fruit fills the lower left. Dark green leaves spill across the top edge, and the signature is at the lower right.

Caillebotte painted this market stall for Albert Courtier, a notary in Meaux and a friend, who intended it for his dining room. The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston dates it to about 1881–82 and describes a close-up view of fruit stacked on a stand, where repeated forms and colours make a bold pattern and the brushwork suggests the lusciousness of the fruit.

The original: oil on canvas, about 1881–82, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Gustave Caillebotte (1848–1894) was a French painter closely tied to the Impressionists, whom he also supported as a collector, buying paintings by Monet, Renoir and Pissarro and helping fund their exhibitions. Trained under Léon Bonnat after a law degree, he painted the streets and boating life of Paris with a sharper, more realist precision than his colleagues, most famously in Paris Street; Rainy Day (1877) and The Floor Scrapers (1875). His work is held by the Art Institute of Chicago, the Musée d'Orsay and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Printed as a museum-grade giclée on Hahnemühle fine art paper using 12-ink archival pigment printing.
