gustave-caillebotte-the-argenteuil-bridge-and-the-seine-fine-art-print
Gustave Caillebotte — The Argenteuil Bridge and the Seine | Fine Art Print

The underside of an iron bridge fills the upper half of the picture, its curved girders and railing painted in violet and blue-grey, with a small dark figure walking along the deck at the upper left. At the left a pale stone pier catches the sun, and its shadow spreads across the river in dark blue. Through the arch, a green hill with white houses and a thin chimney rises beyond a low red barge and a small dark boat trailing white foam.

Monet had painted the iron bridge at Argenteuil in 1874; Caillebotte chose a close view from below that includes only one of its seven arches. The dark girders close off the upper half of the picture and remove the usual layering of foreground, middle ground and distance. The canvas was shown in the Durand-Ruel retrospective held a few months after his death in 1894.

The original: oil on canvas, c. 1883, Museum Barberini, Potsdam.

Gustave Caillebotte (1848–1894) was a French painter closely tied to the Impressionists, whom he also supported as a collector, buying paintings by Monet, Renoir and Pissarro and helping fund their exhibitions. Trained under Léon Bonnat after a law degree, he painted the streets and boating life of Paris with a sharper, more realist precision than his colleagues, most famously in Paris Street; Rainy Day (1877) and The Floor Scrapers (1875). His work is held by the Art Institute of Chicago, the Musée d'Orsay and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Printed as a museum-grade giclée on Hahnemühle fine art paper using 12-ink archival pigment printing.
