The Paris Salon jury rejected it from the 1875 exhibition, reportedly finding its bare-chested labourers a 'vulgar subject'; he then showed it at the second Impressionist exhibition in 1876. Its plain, close-up treatment of manual work gave urban working men the compositional weight academic painting had reserved for classical figure subjects. The canvas passed to the Louvre in 1929 and has hung at the Musee d'Orsay since 1986.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eGustave Caillebotte (1848–1894) was a French painter closely tied to the Impressionists, whom he also supported as a collector, buying paintings by Monet, Renoir and Pissarro and helping fund their exhibitions. Trained under Léon Bonnat after a law degree, he painted the streets and boating life of Paris with a sharper, more realist precision than his colleagues, most famously in Paris Street; Rainy Day (1877) and The Floor Scrapers (1875).
